Pousada Mucuge has been selected by DiscoverBrazil as the top lodging option in Mucuge, a picturesque little town in the Chapada Diamantina. The Pousada Mucuge is located in the center of the town, in an old house built by the Jesuits in the XIX century. Recently, the pousada annexed a new more modern building to make it more comfortable to for its guests. This charming pousada is equipped with 30 apartments, swimming pool, meeting center, restaurant and parking.

Mucuge is a quaint little town integrated located in the National Park of of the Chapada Diamantina. Its architecture reveals a The colonial style. The houses are well preserved and still in use today by locals. The Mucuge River was the first location where explorers found diamonds and established in the XIX century. Explorers needed a place where to establish and they did it in Mucuge. The Chapada Diamantina is calledgets its name  afterfrom this this diamond exploitation., Diamantina comes from diamond. While visiting Mucuge, stop by O Museu do Diamante, the diamond’s museum which offers exhibits and information about the diamond history in this region.

Don’t miss the Sandália Bordada, do Tiburtino, da Sibéria e das Andorinhas waterfalls which are part of the trekking tours to the Garimpeiro routes (Garimpeiro means the person who exploits minerals in Portuguese.). (Cecilia we do not sell the Poco Encantado. Please take a look at the attached package for the tours we sell).Poço Encantado is another landmark of the Chapada, it is a beautiful lake inside of a cave where the sunlight enters hitting the water and dispersed into the colors of the spectrum. Note: this only happens from April to August. Coming back from Poço Encantado there is another nice visit to Igatu, a small village built solely of stones. It is believed that in Serra do Capa Bode can be seen OVNIs.

The Chapada Diamantina and its 1,500 sq. km (580 miles) of mountainous land, canyons and valleys is a natural refuge for innumerous endemic plants, waterfalls, large caves and rivers. Cachoeira da Fumaça (the smoke waterfall) is the highest in Brazil with measuring 340 mts.(1115 ft). It is called the smoke waterfall because the wind blows the water back up and creates the smoke effect. Walking from the village of Capão, the smoke waterfall is located 2 ½ hours away. The view is astonishing and the trip worth the effort. The Morro Pai Inácio plateau is another landmark you can’t miss in Chapada Diamantina; this mountain offers the best view of the Chapada and is a great place to watch the sun set.

Visiting the Chapada requires good walking shoes, swimming suit, light clothes, sun block and sunglasses. It would be a good idea to take a backpack with water, sandwich and a change of clothes for those tours where waterfalls are included, and don’t forget to bring your camera with lots of films.
