    Molokai. Rustic. Relaxing. Real.
The sign at the airport welcomes you, 'Slow down, you're on Molokai now.' A good piece of advice as you begin your Molokai vacation. Just 38 miles long and 10 miles wide, with about 6,000 residents and only two traffic lights, Molokai is said to be the most Hawaiian Island of them all. It also has a reputation for being the friendliest and one of the most peaceful. Life here is simple and slow, and Hawaii ways of old are alive and well. Residents still catch their dinner by throwing nets and fishing from the reef. They hunt pigs and deer and live in modest, rural villages. They like it that way.

If you're looking for the 'real Hawaii,' you will find it here. Molokai attractions proudly display this authenticity in all its glory. From Hawaii's highest waterfall to the world's tallest sea cliffs. And Molokai activities? Just because it's relaxing, doesn't mean there isn't plenty to do. Volcanic eruptions over a million years ago and the island's untamed, unspoiled geological history have made it a place where you can enjoy all kinds of activities in a back-to-nature manner. Hike, boat, kayak, swim, fish, bike, horseback ride, or go four-wheeling. For a once-in-lifetime experience, take a guided mule ride 1,700 feet down a spectacular (and sheer) cliff leading to Kalaupapa National Historic Park, where the famous 1860s leper exile is located. Lose yourself as you explore this historic and beautiful island. And when the day is done, find yourself at your quaint, comfortable cottage at Kaluakoi Villas. It's 'the' place to stay on Molokai.

    Activities & Attractions
Some of the best Molokai activities are the least expensive. Most won’t cost you a dime because they involve simply exploring the island’s diverse natural wonders. One side of the island is a flat, dry wilderness, while the other is a lush, green palm-filled wonderland with a peninsula extending from breathtaking cliffs. Drive along the coastal highway for spectacular vistas of the islands of Maui, Lanai, and Kahoolawe.

Adventure seekers will definitely want to visit one of the most popular Molokai attractions: Molokai Ranch. This 53,000-acre ranch has almost all of the activities you can imagine. Horseback ride, mountain bike, sport fish, kayak, sail, whale-watch, hike, scuba dive, or snorkel. There’s even sport shooting and archery. It’s just one of the places you’ll find real Hawaii cowboys or “paniolos.” This is, after all, farm country. Rows and rows of papaya, coffee, and corn decorate the landscape, along with old farmhouses and fishponds. Wander off the beaten track. You might find yourself someplace remote and secluded. Molokai beaches certainly have that feeling. The odds of finding an empty one are good. Walk along a rugged shoreline to Kaupoa Beach for tide pool exploration and lounge in the sun on silky white sand. Or visit Papohaku, Hawaii’s biggest white-sand beach at three miles long and 100 yards wide. Perfect for picnics, sunsets, sun bathing, and kite-flying. Need a kite? Head to the Big Wind Kite Factory for a kite with some flair.

Or if you prefer to be the one looking at the world from above, don’t forget the unforgettable. Traverse by mule down 2.9 miles of trail with 26 switchbacks to Kalaupapa National Historic Park where you’ll meet your Damien Tours guide to learn about the historic leper colony. Afterward, have lunch overlooking sea cliffs and waterfalls at Judd Park. Not far from this historic area, you’ll find the beautifully unpretentious Ironwood Hills Golf Course set in the cool, lush central highlands. This 1928 plantation course is a throwback to a time when golf was less sophisticated, and the pineapple workers often had to play around the cows.

    Shopping, Dining & Entertainment
The people who visit Molokai aren’t looking for high-rise hotels, shopping centers, nightlife, glitz, or glamour. They want a low-key, countrified vacation filled with charm and adventure. As far as dining goes, Molokai restaurants are the farthest thing from formal. They’re casual gathering places to eat island-grown food, relax, and tell stories. If you’re staying at the Kaluakoi Villas, there are several Molokai restaurants just a short drive away in old Maunaloa Town. Or head to Kaunakakai where you’ll find the most choices. Try the hand-tossed pizza at Molokai Pizza Café. (Even their sandwich buns are homemade.) For fresh baked goods on the sweeter side, follow your nose to Kanemitsu Bakery. It’s been a local favorite since 1922. Locals also love Molokai Drive-Inn for American and Asian dishes. Don’t let the funky décor deter you. But if it does, try the take-out window and bring a bite back to your cottage lanai.

Shopping on Molokai means farmer’s markets, island boutiques, flower shops, craft markets, and surf stores. You’ll find Molokai-grown papayas and mangoes, organic vegetables and herbs, coffee, macadamia nuts, and plumeria. And don’t miss the Kamakana Fine Arts Gallery in Kaunakakai where over 100 local artists exhibit their contemporary and cultural fine arts and crafts. Entertainment means sipping sunset cocktails while watching live entertainment from local musicians. Try to catch legendary “Pound for Pound,” a group of artists each over 250 pounds. They perform Hawaiian, reggae, and country, including hits from their CD, “100% Molokai,” a tribute to this amazing island. Or if you’d rather veg at the movies, Maunaloa Cinemas in Maunaloa Town is a triplex theatre that plays first-run movies.
