Copan Ruins
Tour the most thoroughly studied archeological site in the Maya world, named World Heritage Site in 1980, and, because of its impressive sculptures and ornamented buildings , known as the Athens of the New World. You can walk through the Sculpture Museum where you will observe original sculptures that where placed in the museums for protection against climatic factors as well as a full size replica of the Rosalila Temple. Walk into the Tunnels Rosalila and Jaguares, where you can see the original structures over which later pyramids were built and the Archeological Park where, among others, you can admire the famous estelae, sculpted stone monoliths used to mark highlights of the rulers of Copan. In this area you will admire the Hieroglyphic Stairway, longest stone inscription in America. Then, walk through the town of Copan where you can see and maybe purchase local handicrafts and visit the Town’s Museum.
