Located just off the main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, Makanda By the Sea's unique contemporary design blends elegant architecture with its striking green backdrop in one of Costa Rica's richest natural settings. In July 1985, Makanda By the Sea was started by the designer and owner, Joe McNichols. Inspired by his dream, Makanda has been built in balance with its natural surroundings. Using nature as the backdrop, the contemporary architecture's openness allows the rich tropical flora to become a part of the living environment. Makanda By the Sea is 12 acres of sanctuary, 100 meters above the ocean. All of Makanda's Villas and Studios have been carefully placed in the botanical rainforest gardens with spectacular views of the sixty mile coastline. It is truly a haven for the adventurism seeking relief from controlled environments of modern life.
