The
Monteverde cloud forest (the green Mountain in Spanish) in Costa Rica is located
in the cordillera of Tilarán spreading both on the Pacific and Atlantic side of
the country.
On the Caribbean side, the cloud forest begins at an elevation
around 3900 feet with a peak at 5526 feet on the top of the Cerro Amigos Mountain.
The Monteverde cloud forest (the green Mountain in Spanish) in

On the Caribbean side, the cloud forest begins at an elevation
around 3900 feet with a peak at 5526 feet on the top of the Cerro Amigos Mountain.
In this area, the trees grow to about 120 feet high and you will
note that those trees are usually bending all in the same direction as constant
winds blow on the top of the mountains.
This
large reserve is one of the most outstanding wildlife reserves in the Americas and
includes eight distinct ecological zones. It protects more than 400 species of birds
and over 100 species of mammals, including jaguars, tapirs, agoutis, coatis, innumerable
plants, reptiles, toucans or howler monkeys. In addition to the well-known Quetzal,
you may see the endangered Bellbird, or Emerald Toucan. There are also 30 species
of hummingbirds living in this unique sanctuary.
