Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was settled by the Quakers in the early 50's then numerous European from Germany, Switzerland and other northern European countries settled in Costa Rica.
With the pressure of a strong ecological spirit and a deep love of nature expressed by the locals, the cloud forest became protected by law in 1972 as the habitat of unique species in the world, like the endangered quetzal bird.
Today, the heritage of the Quakers left us a few milk farms where you can buy some rich cheese and dairy products.

Coffee (one of the best coffee in Central/South America) is also a very developed activity with many fields of coffee plant all over the region as the temperature, the humidity and the sun light create a micro climate ideal for this cultivation.
A very printed Swiss spirit carved the architecture of the Monteverde region and lots of hotels in the area looks like building from the edelweiss or the black forest in Germany. Made of wood with Swiss details in architecture and decoration, those wood made hotels are very welcoming with a warm atmosphere.Once installed in your hotel, you want to discover the cloud forest and all the activities that Monteverde offers.
The best attraction is of course the Canopy tour that can be done by crossing the forest walking on suspended bridges or by sliding from tree to tree attached on to a cable running from platform to platform on the top of those gigantic tropical trees. Both are fun, very safe and highly recommended. Safety is one of the priorities of the Costa Rican government, all installations are meticulously inspected and experiences staff are following very precise and drastic security measures to ensure your total safety.

In town, you will find also other attractions like the reptilarium or the frog pound where they offer day and night visits so you can enjoy and discover the underworld of the Rain forest with amazing animals you would never have thought they even exist.
